Blogger Happy Hour: Back to School
Your happy hour hosts. Credit: Kathryn.
On my first day of sixth grade at Hale Junior High, the sister of the girl who played Heather on Mr. Belvedere called me a nerd.
During my first week in third grade in Islas Malvinas in Argentina, I approached the girl I developed a crush on, Jimena, and told her I thought she was pretty. She told me I was ugly and to go away.
Going back to school has never been easy. Rodney Dangerfield learned that lesson and he had to face William Zabka and Kurt Vonnegut. You have to make new friends, buy new Trapper Keepers, and avoid getting stuffed in your locker. Gone are the long, summer days followed by slow, warm nights, trips to the beach and lounging by the pool, hikes, vacations, and grilling in the hot afternoons.
For these reasons, perhaps, first days back to school can be so memorable, almost traumatic. I still remember my first day of high school at El Camino Real. I proudly wore a UCLA shirt, a denim jacket, white Nikes, and a heinous pimple I had tried to scrub off all night.
The Princess remembers always wearing a brand new outfit on her first day back to school -– but not before her dad ritually took a photo of her and her sister.
These back-to-school first days are long gone for most of us (sorry to those first-year teachers and grad school students), but no one says we can’t still celebrate.
So join us at our Back to School Blogger Happy Hour this Friday, September 7th, at at 8pm. I am co-hosting with Kassy K, , I Now Pronounce You, new host , and special guest host, .
Dress up in your Catholic school uniform, wear your hot librarian glasses, or bring your school books. Your summer is over. Might as well start drinking like it’s fifth grade all over again.

I still have my uniform from Catholic school. Of course, that brings up all sorts of ruler-related memories…
Now I know what you’ll be wearing.

I’m a maybe on Friday. If this week doesn’t kick my ass too much I’ll be there.
If this week DOES kick your ass you should be there.

I’ll be on time for this one…
If this one doesn’t do it, nothing will.

i love that the princess has pictures. we have pictures of me on every first day of school from kindergarten to senior year of high school in front of my house about to go to school. i thought my mother was the only overly sentimental (i thought weird in high school) parent out there.
I only had the one from high school because it was, well, high school. Other than that, just class photos.
Send me yours and I’ll post it.

I’ll call you a nerd on Friday if you want, just to keep that nostalgic back-to-school feeling alive.
Nostalgia? More like emotional trauma, considering I still remember the incident.

Oh come on, like we won’t all be at Camelot by 10pm.
See you there…
September 4th, 2007 at 11:31 am
Arjewtino - I’m scared to see you in a Catholic school outfit!
I’m not sure what would be worse, the cross-dressing or the cross-religion.

Camelot by 10 only if we seriously underestimated how many school girl uniforms there would be…of course, I mean worn by women…not AJT.
Anti-Semite.

Camelot at 10pm? The strippers will all know me by blog name by then.
September 4th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
AHAHAHA Can’t wait. Circle V took me to Camelot after her birthday last year. That’s all I remember.
I vaguely remember something about that. I had to leave early, just when all the fun started.

Was it amateur night?
Wish I’d been there!

I will definitely be wearing my hot librarian glasses. I don’t think you’ve had the pleasure of seeing them yet.
Or maybe even better, I’ll see if I can dig up my cheerleading outfit. Bet it still fits!

i may possibly be there. if i do, i’m bringing gael with me. does that mean i get any free drinks or anything?
September 4th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
will you have a drink in honor of the beginning of my last (read: 11th) year of university since I’m no in DC? not than anything is keeping me from being in DC being as I have no classes to which to return….

I actually have class Saturday morning, so I hope the HH does start at 7pm, as opposed to 8pm. It’s literally a “School Night” for me so, sadly, I’ll need to be in bed by around 10pm. Yuck-O.
September 4th, 2007 at 5:42 pm
This time, I know I can make it!
I-66’s Camelot suggestion is a great idea! Silicone t*tties and tan lines!

Luckily, my first day of school in kindergarten, Mrs. Wright was a veteran. I didn’t speak much English and I didn’t know where the bathroom was or how to ask for it.
She recognized the agony-forehead-vein-about-to-burst look and got me in the right direction without even a skid mark to show for it…
They don’t make women like that anymore.

School started here in January. You’re so behind the times. Like, by 14 hours.

Thank you. Thank you all.
100 comments is a big accomplishment. I don’t even have a speech prepared. Um… I’d like to thank God, without whom none of this would have been possible. Thanks to my family, for, yanno, sticking it out with me through all these comments. Thanks to my producers and directors for giving me the opportunity to be creative. As long as I live I will always remember this moment. Thank you!

You are such a little bitch.
