TAKOMA PARK, MD — Though Barack Obama used his soaring campaign momentum to sweep the three regional primaries on Tuesday, the Democratic candidate that has inspired a nation and solicited comparisons to the Lord Almighty failed to win a key primary – the one in Arjewtino’s apartment.

Obama secured more than 60% of the votes in Maryland and Virginia and won 75% of the votes in the District. But despite these landmark victories, the man who is seeking to become the first African American president in U.S. history failed to garner a single vote in this blogger’s household.

bar-graph.jpgAccording to this comprehensive chart, Obama won 0% of the popular vote in Arjewtino’s one-bedroom converted attic, with 100% of registered voters not voting for the Senator from Illinois.

With 100% precincts reporting late Tuesday, none of the delegates where Arjewtino calls home went to Obama as his camp tried to figure out what went wrong. Arjewtino, having previously declared himself a “superdelegate” because he completed a crossword puzzle, was left speechless trying to explain what happened.

An analysis of the results shows that Arjewtino, who had decided merely two weeks ago to support Obama after months of anguish, was unaware of Maryland voter registration deadlines and was unable to exercise his franchise.

voterregdeadline.jpg

In an election season when his vote would have actually meant something, Arjewtino idiotically waited until the last minute to register in the Old Line State, even though he had plenty of time to do so since moving from D.C. more than 18 months ago.

“Man, that was really stupid of me,” Arjewtino was overheard telling The Princess on Tuesday.

“Yeah, it really was,” she reportedly replied.

In his shame, Arjewtino dodged text messages and e-mails from friends and family over whether he had voted. His dad’s Monday night text, “Are you voting for Obama tomorrow?” went unanswered. Arjewtino managed to reply, however, to his dad’s Tuesday night follow-up text of “Did you or didn’t you?” with this sad, pathetic missive: “I would have but I didn’t register in time.”

Accusations of voter irregularity hounded Arjewtino’s apartment Tuesday night, even as extended poll hours closed and Obama’s resounding victory was proclaimed on the evening TV news. It is unclear at this time who The Princess voted for as she failed to disclose her choice, citing confidentiality and privacy laws, declaring only, “That’s none of your business!”

Arjewtino considered late Tuesday afternoon commuting to his former polling place in Adams Morgan to cast what he knew was an improper vote, just to get the oval-shaped “I Voted/Yo Voté” sticker, the sight of which haunted him throughout the day.

In the end, however, he knew it was illegal to vote in a state where one no longer lives. Also, it would have been a pain in the ass to go there and then get back on the Red Line to go home.

Arjewtino has promised himself, his girlfriend, and Obama to be registered in time for the November general election.

Awesome. I love it. You’re ready for The Onion.

amy’s last blog post..new very late february banner

I wish. But thanks.

i was registered in time and applied for my absentee ballot in time, but thanks to VA voting people, the ballot didn’t come in time, so my vote didn’t count either. i’m still pissed.

That’s actually pretty disheartening. Did you follow up with them before the primary?

Baby Bien on 14 February, 2008 at 10:24 am #

Ummmm DC isn’t a state.

If Puerto Rico can have 55 delegates to D.C.’s 17 (or maybe 15, I don’t remember), then D.C. can be a state.

Arjew… Arjew… Arjew… sigh.

However, the process is a joke. Is this a way to run a democracy??? In many countries, rounds of voting are national holidays, weekends, or 24 hours worth of voting time… I have teacher friends that had to be at work by 6AM, and had meetings until 9PM… pathetic. Not to mention the icy roads that evening!!

I think rounds of voting should be open for 24 hours, period. But i know this wouldn’t satisfy our DEMAND to immediately know results at 7:00:01 PM on election nights… you got to wonder sometimes…

All good ideas. For me, it should be simple: make it a national holiday.

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t vote either. I didn’t register in time, but even if I had I was sick on tuesday and it rained, so it wouldn’t matter anyway.

I filled out the registration thing for DC online, but then it said you have to go get a paper one and submit that TOO in order to be registered for the primary. And to that I say…EFF That.

I don’t mind all the paperwork hoops they make you jump through, I consider it my civic duty. Only problem is my cortex doesn’t.

startingtoday on 14 February, 2008 at 11:27 am #

I remembered to register, and therefore got to vote.

I even left work early to vote that way I wouldn’t have to walk through the hood in the dark. Turns out my polling place was in Mt. Pleasant anyway. I admit it; I just was happy to have an excuse to leave work early.

startingtoday’s last blog post..Why was I surprised this time around?

I really would have had no excuse. My polling place stayed open until 9:30pm.

New campaign mantra for wannabe supporters…

Yes We Can…(psyche!)

I prefer one that sounds like Ron Burgundy misreading the teleprompter: “Yes, we Can?”

Smooth move, Exlax. Now if Billary wins the nomination and gets flattened by McCain with the help of a Ralph nader spoiler, I’m holding you personally responsible!!!

Rory’s last blog post..?They say there’s no truth in advertising??

You’re right. That makes complete sense.

Of course, if Billary wins the nomination AND the presidency, you’ll be lavishing me with praise.

Shame on you, Arjewtino. Shame on you. But at least you can vote. I, being a “legal alien” cannot.

In my country it’s illegal not to vote. You would’ve been taken out back and sentenced to fifty kicks from an angry wallabee…

Is that some sort of hybrid koala/kangaroo? ’cause that would be cool.

CollegeGrad on 14 February, 2008 at 1:05 pm #

Love the graph! Was it made in Excel? It’s just so awesomely tacky!

CollegeGrad’s last blog post..My Favorite Movie Scenes

Yeah, I “made” it in Excel, which means I spent 20 seconds typing information into four cells and clicked the graph-maker-button-thing. Great graphics, huh?

Platypus on 14 February, 2008 at 1:25 pm #

A wallabee is essentially the same thing as a pademelon, really…

does that help?

OK, I looked it up. I was right! It IS some sort of kangaroo! Or dorcopsise.

i am your sister in shame…. i forgot to renew my drivers license in time. if i buy an ‘obama for yo mama’ t-shirt, does that make up for it?

Not sure if it would completely take away the sting of not voting.

You better make it two shirts.

2 jeters, one cup on 14 February, 2008 at 2:49 pm #

Good thing you didn’t try and vote in DC. It was a fucking horror show.

I imagine. I’m off to read your report right now.

Hey Jess, you don’t need a drivers license to vote. If you forget ID, you just sign an Affirmation of Identity saying you’re you and not Chuck Norris. At least that’s how it is in VA, must be similar elsewhere.

Arjewtino…I heard Barack is pissed. In reviewing the poll results, his campaign said they did great with blacks, women, and even Latinos on Tuesday; but they definitely failed to secure the coveted Jewish-Argentinean electorate.

They really need to work hard on this important constituency. A constituency of one, for all I know.

I think you just made Jess feel even more embarrassed.

More reasons to hate sports douchebags.

Tried to find Clemens, but he comes up clean. I’ll wait for the DNA samples.

Ugh. Can’t blame Peyton, he probably feels like he needs the GOP to protect his money. But A-Rod? He’s a disgrace to his culture.

Then again, I disgrace my culture all the time.

My roommate just walked in and voted. She didn’t sign up for anything or really even register. Apparently you can do that but if there’s a recount your vote won’t count.

Democracy is awesome!

Go California!

rs27’s last blog post..Take These Broken Wings

I’m not sure if that’s right. I’m going to have to ask someone I know who works in election reform and get back to you.

OK, I asked him and he doesn’t think it’s legal. Who told her that her vote would count unless there was a recount? That’s fucked up. Either she’s lying, misinformed, or something illegal happened. I’d put the front odds on the first two, but you never know.

Scotus on 14 February, 2008 at 4:25 pm #

The “I Voted” stickers haunted me all day, also. I did vote, but when I left the polling place, the old guy holding the stickers had wandered off, so I never got one. The man had exactly ONE responsibility that day, and he still found a way to blow it.

As far as I’m concerned, that makes me a disenfranchised voter. Where’s Michael Moore when you need him?

Scotus’s last blog post..Geekgasm

I wonder how much voting would drop off, if at all, if people didn’t get those stickers.

Twoste on 14 February, 2008 at 4:47 pm #

you didn’t vote and someone died. P Diddy is furious.

I miss those ubiquitous T-shirts from two years ago. Wait, no I don’t.

But this comment made me laugh.

H on 14 February, 2008 at 5:46 pm #

you probably have time to register in PA for our lovely Apr 22 primary. it’s only a short 2 hour drive to my polling place for you…. and even less to the border. we could a 78th democratic voter in my congressional district. please?

I need to get my name on your parents’ water bill or lease…fast. PA has a LOT of delegates.

rs27 on 14 February, 2008 at 7:48 pm #

Some old lady told her that. Probably Lincoln’s Grandma or something. I thought it was weird. Why can we just vote on the internet?

I don’t get it.

Why would The Princess not tell you who she voted for? She must have voted for Fred Thompson because of his excellent work as New York City’s District Attorney.

That’s no so bad, at least it was a only a primary.

Back in 2000, I cast an absentee ballot for Al Gore in the presidential election. It was my first time voting, ever. I was so proud of myself…

Then, two days after the election I recieved a letter in the mail informing me my vote wasn’t counted. Apparently checking the “register me to vote” box on your drivers license application doesn’t count for jack.

I was disenfranchised by the DMV! Sorry about the last 8 years…

Oy, as I already don’t have enough issues with the my identity and the actions of my people, I have to read this! A contemporary Jewish hero, a man I hold up as a model of a true mensch, to my son forgets to register to vote.

Sigh.

Son No. 2 exercises his first right to vote. He is a high school senior and he remembered to register.

Son No. 1 and I are going to see Obama on Moday. I hope this whole Arjewtino voting fiasco doesn’t impact what I hope is the beginning of a long friendship.

Arjewtino…..why obsess over what makes a good democracy? After all, these little snippets of unfairness favor the current regime. So what if someone works all day and is racing against time to get to the polls? So what if you had to be registered by 1/22? Ooops!

It’s kind of analogous to when banks and businesses scrape a penny here and there off you only for you to realize that after they’ve done that to everyone…it amounts to a very large sum of cash.

In the end, you have a ruling party who wants to stay in power so why should they make it easy for the common man to vote? How do you think Bush won Ohio in 2004?

Next time you’ll know better.

Hey man, procrastination happens…I still have to travel to Fredericksburg, VA every election because I have yet to register to vote up here. The good thing is I get to visit my grandparents. The bad thing is I actually have to take that pain-in-the-ass trip to Fredericksburg damned Virgina on a Tuesday whenever I want to vote. Plus, I can talk shit about local city politics, but can’t really do anything about it come voting time!

I’ve been busy and haven’t been doing too much blog reading lately, so I’m about to spend the next hour or so catching up on your stuff…

That is…unless….she voted for Gravel? Seriously? Gravel?
