The earliest crush I remember was when I was 5 and I just knew I was in love with a girl named Sarah.
She had blonde hair and was mean to me. She ran away when I came near her and told me I was ugly. I didn’t care. To me, she was beautiful.
Once, during recess, Sarah got in trouble and was “benched” by our teacher, which meant she had to sit on a bench away from all the fun tag, four-square, and kickball for five minutes. This, I decided, was my chance to talk to her. I walked right up to some kid who was standing in front of our teacher and pushed him to the ground.
“Arjewtinito!” screamed the teacher. “You’re benched! Go sit down!”
Yes!, I thought to myself, now I can sit next to Sarah and make her my girlfriend!
I swaggered to the bench with the confidence of a mini-Casanova, mentally crafting the poetic words that would soon win Sarah’s heart and make her mine for all-time. I was about to sit down on the bench, the playground altar of our future love, when the teacher pointed to Sarah and said, “You can come off the bench now.”
Oh cruel fate! I thought. Shakespeare himself couldn’t capture the daggered heartache I felt at that precise moment. Why, teacher, why did you take my love away? May you die a thousand deaths, though each would be less painful than what I was suffering!
“Oh, and Arjewtinito, I want you to think about what you did for the next five minutes,” she added. “And I’m going to have a talk with your mother about this.”
Fuck.
I never did tell beautiful, blonde Sarah how I felt about her, though she did come to my 6th birthday party and I have a photo of me with my arm around her. The crush dissipated soon after, and I learned years later in high school she served time in juvenile hall.
Everyone has had crushes. They’re fleeting and intense and invigorating. Blog crushes are no different.
So join me and the regular crew of bloggers next week for the Invite Your Blog Crush blogger happy hour.
That blog you first fell in love with that inspired you to start your own blog? Tell him. That blogger who makes you laugh and makes you look forward to her posts everyday? Invite her. That blogger whose photos make you feel tingly, you know, down there? Contact her.
Have more than one blog crush? Invite them all. Either way, you and your blog crush are invited to the happy hour, which, as always, is open to EVERYONE, bloggers, non-bloggers, lurkers, readers, commenters, etc.

I guess it didn’t occur to you to just walk over to the bench.
Anyone who thinks I’m not smoking the hookah is sadly mistaken.
I was 5 and one year removed from Argentina. I could barely “say” the word bench.
my first crush was ..1st grade..Rodney Lane… he picked up my pencil after it rolled onto the floor.. AND he had this pimping shiny polyester shirt that was black but had planets and comets on it….schweet…. the relationship got pretty far..he even gave me one of his school pics…. to this day..my mom STILL has that pic…
xoxo
Only women remember what childhood crushes wore, especially if it was pimping.
Have you tried Googling/MySpacing/Facebooking him?
Jeff Woodside…shortest kid in the class and could really draw. Our moms were friends (the kiss of death), so we never ‘went out’ because we were best friends. In 4th grade male/female best friends were frowned upon, so we kept it a secret.
I used to sneak to his house as he used to live across the school from the library….ahh young love.
Whatever happened to those good old days?
I kept my “relationship” with this girl Alyson in 3rd grade secret from my friends because they would have made fun of me. Two years later, one of my best friends went steady with her. Traitor.
well..no…i never even thought about doing that…until you wrote this post!!…now im afraid..my taste in men…well…. who knows what prison he has ended up in…
xoxo
Ask Velvet, she’s got a MySpace account from what I hear.
My first crush was a greek boy named Ianis. I was 5 and my mom and his mom planned our future wedding at a school party at the mall.
My mom found out my crush’s name because I talked in my sleep at the time.
With a name like that, he’d be easy to e-stalk.
Mighty Mouse was my first crush. I didn’t like people much.
Didn’t?
My first crush was in third grade. Her name was Deanna she lived three streets over. Unfortunately her bff Candy had a crush on me making a relationship with Deanna just too complicated. And I wanted no part of Candy because I obviously was in love with Deanna. Had I known in third grade what I know now about girls named Candy things might have been different.
For one thing, you would have learned to play Candy off of Deanna to get them both. Never underestimate the power of female competition.
Come on SB! I\’ll look him up with my nifty profile. Though, I have been known to send friend requests to people by accident.
Um, you people sure do have a lot of hosts to these HH\’s. Are you trying to keep it balanced in case the inmates want to overtake the asylum?
My blog crush is, has always been, and will always be JohnnyDC, by the way. Two and a half years and we\’ve never met! Sniff sniff!
We’re going to keep adding hosts until there are enough for a baseball team.
who doesn’t have a blog crush on arjew? i mean. really.
my best position is catcher. just sayin.
Mine is shortstop. Oh well.
@**&^*$&^
I swear you people are conspiring against me. Do you have access to my google calendar? I can just hear you now, “That Belle chick’s going out of town again… time for another Blogger Happy Hour!”
&%$#@^#
(Oh, and P.S., have fun without me! Again.)
Have fun without you? Impossible.
arjewtino has already encouraged me to quit my job so i can attend happy hours. considering my last one was in may, i am considering it.
i was just thinking about my first serious crush, although we were friends, so does that count? he would come visit his grandparents who lived two houses down from me and we would hang out all summer long. then i found out he was going to live there permanently. he was going into 8th grade, me into 7th. the first day of school, he asked out another carrie m and they were together for like 3 years.
that felt AWEsome.
Ouch. Summer crushes are the worst. You know they won’t last but there’s part of you that feels like they always will.
My first crush was in 1st grade, Jon Michael. I was his Valentine, he came to my birthday party, we swang on the swings and “got married…” and then he moved to Colorado. I literally cried. But then I got a new crush…who’s uncle was the director (or producer maybe? whatever he was, his name was on the outside cover of the tape!) of “The Land Before Time” which was pretty much the coolest thing ever to 1st graders in 1988 since fruit roll-ups.
That was the greatest show in the history of television. I’m off to Netflix to see if it’s out on DVD.
Ok, I just checked. That was NOT the show I was thinking of. It was Land of the Lost.
Now THAT show WAS the greatest show in the history of television. It made Saturday mornings. That and Saved By The Bell.
That show is now in my Netflix queue. They probably only have one DVD per season so you’ll have a long wait if you do the same.
Timmy Boyle. He knew EVERYTHING about dinosaurs and dolphins, and wore many t-shirts with dinosaurs or dolphins on them. He also wore shorts, with his athletic socks pulled up to the knee, and blue velcro sneakers.
I looked him up on Friendster a few years ago. It doesn’t look like he’s changed much.
Was that sad or reassuring?
Kindergarten. JR Dowding. I held him down on the playground and made him kiss me. Come to think of it, my approach with men has not changed much…
My novia Lorena did that to me on my 9th birthday on a moon bounce. I told her to get off of me.
my first crush was in third grade. a boy named robbie who sat next to me. one day, i puked on him. by accident.
that was the end of that.
Did you puke on him because you liked him or was it a matter completely not connected to him?
Her name was Dana something err other. Second Grade. She was a smokin’ hot black girl and she gave me my first kiss in the coat closet. AND we got caught, which sucked.
Racist.
I had a crush on this girl from the third grade up until… well… it’s still going. The closest I ever got to dating her was one dance in 7th grade. Then we made out, several times, at my 10 year high school reunion. It was pretty much teh awesomest. Too bad she lives 500 miles away.
shoot! I am going to be out of town! and you owe me a drink
next one, i guess…
A 30 year old dude still kitted out in a bowl cut and a dolphin t-shirt? Sad.
His name was Matt. I used to whisper to him during class and sneak him kisses on the cheek. He grew up to work at Best Buy. I pick ‘em well.
I’m pretty sure I haven’t been this excited for Happy Hour in about two years. YAY!

His name was Tony. We were 6. I made him a card on Valentine’s day, gave it to him, then tried to kiss him. He ran away from me. I cried all afternoon.
I DO have several blog crushes.. There are a few regulars that I read and respect that I might invite…. Is a blog crush the same thing as a crush on a blogger? I’ve got one of those, too.
My first crush? Emily Mann. I saw her at our high school reunion last year, and she was married and about 12 months pregnant. She was still pretty, though! If I were into pregnant married chicks, it would have been on!
